What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are summaries at the top of Google, generated from multiple sources, before the classic ten blue links.
They answer the question on the results page. Your page then becomes a source — or it drops below the fold.
How does Google choose what goes in?
Google pulls passages from pages that answer the question clearly, with a source, structure and a tone that can be trusted.
Pages that open with mood or a sales pitch, or that spread the answer across three screens, are rarely cited. Palan sees the same pattern in how ChatGPT picks sources: first the block that still holds up on its own.
What does this mean for your traffic?
Informational queries yield fewer clicks when the answer already sits in the Overview. Commercial queries still click through more often, because a choice or proof is needed.
The traffic that remains is sharper: whoever clicks wants depth. That asks for content that is citable and still gives a reason to read on — not only a snippet.
What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are Google-generated answers at the top of search results, assembled from multiple web sources. They summarise the question before the user opens a site. Staying visible means making content Google can cite, and that then adds something the Overview does not have.
What you can still steer
- 01Answer the question in the first paragraph, with no preamble.
- 02Put a definition or step list that still holds up on its own.
- 03Name sources and your own observation, not vague claims.
- 04Keep one primary question per page.
- 05Do not only measure sessions: check whether you show up as a source in answers.
Frequently asked questions
Are AI Overviews the same as featured snippets?
No. A snippet usually pulls one block from one page. An Overview combines several sources into a new answer. You can appear in both, or in neither. The requirement is the same: a passage that already answers the question on its own. Without that block, markup does not help.
Does all organic traffic disappear?
No. Overviews hit informational queries hardest. People who compare, buy or look for an agency still click. Palan is a content agency: we make pages that are citable and still give a reason to continue to the service. Measuring sessions alone then says too little.
Can I force Google to cite me?
No. You can raise the odds: a clear answer, your own example, clean structure. Markup tricks without that substance do not work. Schema on hollow copy still leaves you invisible. Palan writes the block first and adds schema after, not the other way around.
